The Trump Administration is reportedly finalizing a sweeping and comprehensive travel ban with a new travel restriction policy. The USA Travel Ban 2025 will restrict or severely impact the citizens of more than 40 nations from entering the United States. This proposed policy, often referred to as the "Trump 2.0 Travel Ban," is an extended version of the original ban from 2017 (Executive Order 13769), which primarily imposed a travel ban on seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.
On January 20, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order (EO) that aimed to safeguard national security and enhance vetting procedures. Though the ban is still in draft form, the restrictions are expected to be finalized soon. The State Department was given a period of 60 days to implement the ban. So, the policy could most probably take effect within the next week. Trump said in a statement, "We must safeguard our country from those who wish to harm us, exploit our immigration system, or spread hateful ideologies."
The proposed policy includes a tier system according to which the proposal divides the countries into three categories: Red, Orange, and Yellow lists, each with a distinct level of restrictions. Here's a detailed view of these lists:
1. The Red List includes nations facing a total visa ban. Under the proposed policy, citizens of countries listed in the "RED" category would be barred entirely from entering the US. Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen are the countries included in this list.
2. Orange List: Citizens of nations included in the "ORANGE" category would face higher scrutiny. They would also be subjected to "Mandatory in-person interviews" in order to receive a visa. Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, and South Sudan are included in this list, which would allow limited entry with short-term non-immigrant visas available only after in-person interviews.
3. Yellow List: Countries listed in the "YELLOW" category would be given 60 days to address security and administrative concerns. If they fail to comply, they risk being repositioned to the orange or red lists. Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Belarus, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Pakistan, Republic of the Congo, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, East Timor, Turkmenistan, and Vanuatu are the countries included in this list.
